Teaching is Two Way
Exploration
Many novice teachers in Nepal have taken teaching profession
as a process of imparting knowledge to the students. They think that teachers
are the source of knowledge and the students are somehow the passive recipient.
However, the thing is not like that. Teaching is a two way exploration.
The first type of exploration is from the side of teachers.
They need to explore the students. And exploring a student is a difficult job.
It is difficult because a student is the combination of many things such as
society, religion, culture, fooding, clothing, family background, economic
status, political ideology, parents' job and nature, health, gene and so many
other such things. These outside class related factors of students should be
explored by the teachers.
Not only this, but also inside class related factors like a
student's likes and dislikes, relation with friends and teachers, behavior,
regularity, punctuality, eagerness to do and learn etc. are needed to be explored.
While exploring these details, casual talks, interviews,
different extra and co- curricular activities, parents' meetings, health
checkup programs, tests and exams, observation, official records of the
students are some of the tools. The findings of these explorations should be
recorded separately for each student. It can be either a personal record or a
portfolio. This document is an important thing, an overall image of the student
for other teachers to know about the same student.
With these findings of the students in one hand, the teacher
can plan and conduct teaching learning activities. Theories, approaches,
methods, techniques, intrinsic motivation, teaching materials, classroom
management, adaption and omission of the course books etc. are used in this
phase. It is easier to select these things now because the teacher has explored
the student well.
The second type of exploration is from the side of the
student. When a student is educated and gets a certain degree from a
university, he/she can explore the world from a new angle; an angle of his own.
He/ she can explore in any field of science, mathematics, nature, diseases,
national identity, plants, society, religion, culture, fooding, clothing, gene,
nature, civilization, humanity or anything. These types of explorations can
make the world a safer and easier place to live. It eases the relation between
nature and development; and problems and solutions. It lengthens the life of
human beings and the planet we live in.
In other words, the deeper a teacher explores a student at
present, the deeper a student will explore the world in future. If a teacher
neglects a student, the student will neglect the beautiful world. Hence,
teaching is a two way exploration. So, teachers, let's start exploring from
today!
